Incidentally he received the only Oscar nomination ever in his long career for this movie. Their scenes together were quiet heart warming, and Astaire gets to show his dancing skills with Jones.

Apart from Newman and McQueen, the movie has a whole lot of other stars.įaye Dunaway who had given a terrific performance the same year in Chinatown, has another good role as Susan Franklin, Doug Robert's girl, in the second half especially when she is the one who has to handle those trapped and screaming around her.įred Astaire, plays a charming conman Harlee Claibornee who tries to woo Lisolett Muller(Jennifer Jones) a single mom. Also love the way the tension is built up, fire starting off in one floor and slowly spreading to the building. The fire scenes are particularly well shot, and do look quite realistic, considering was done without any graphics. You have two big stars, a solid supporting cast,some great action scenes. The Towering Inferno is just the kind of big screen entertainment, you went to theaters. As the Fire Chief Michael O Halloran(Steve McQueen) swings into action. And the fire slowly ranges from floor to floor, leading to a raging inferno, that threatens everyone in the building. However Duncan refuses to order an evacuation inspite of warning from Roberts. Trouble starts early when a short circuit begins a fire on the 81st floor, which makes Roberts suspect a faulty wiring, for which he holds the electrical subcontractor Roger Simmons( Richard Chamberlain) to be responsible, though the latter denies.ĭuncan throws a party where the rich and powerful of San Francisco are invited, including the city's Mayor and Senator Gary Parker(Robert Vaughn) hoping for an urban renewal contract. While The Poseidon Adventure was more about the ship capsizing in the sea, this was about a high rise building in San Francisco catching fire, based on the novels The Tower by Richard Stern and The Glass Inferno by Thomas Scortia and Frank Robinson. This again was produced by Irwin Allen and had a heavy duty star cast. The Towering Inferno was one of those big screen movies I watched as a kid, along with The Poseidon Adventure, and was totally taken in by the on screen spectacle.
